What Basic Information Should I Put About Myself As A Real Estate Agent On Facebook?

I was recently asked this question, and while it may “seem” basic, it’s surprisingly not so basic.

“What basic information should I put about myself as a real estate agent on Facebook?”

Wow.  I used “basic” a lot up there.

Well, clearly, this is a “basic” post, doh!

Soooo many real estate agents completely miss the mark when it comes to what information they should be sharing about themselves on Facebook, especially when it comes to their real estate business and their personal profile.

I see an overuse of “Top Agent” and numerous awards and an underuse of who they are and what they do.  You know, the simple, basic stuff.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that you have filled out your personal profile, most importantly, the “About” section and include that you are a REALTOR®!! Make sure it’s your current “job” position.  Fill out your profile as completely as possible.  The point here is to make it easy for people to identify that you are a REALTOR®.  The consumer shouldn’t have to hunt this down.

Oh wait, you don’t want your personal profile seen by the public?  Well, keep your personal stuff under wraps, but by all means, put your public stuff out into the public!  This means that you are a real estate agent!  Make that part of your profile public.

Here’s the thing.  Don’t get fancy.  Consumers don’t understand all of the jargon agents are using now days, in order to “make the consumer feel like they aren’t hiring a sales shyster.”  Consumers understand “Real Estate Agent” and “REALTOR®”.  They understand John Doe REALTOR®.  Be understandable to the consumer.

Secondly, if you have created your own Facebook business page for your real estate business, link to it in your “About” profile.  It’s easy to do and it makes it incredibly easy for a consumer who’s doing research on you (yes, consumers sometimes “Google” or “Facebook” people they are considering doing business with) and to connect with you on your Facebook business page.

The point here is, make things easy for the consumer.  Be simple in your personal profile and go for broke in your business page “About” section.  Spill everything over there.

Third, make your “About” section public.  Stop hiding everything under the guise of “privacy”.  If you want business, you want people to know who you are and what you do.

I’m flabbergasted by the number of real estate agents who are “incognito” on Facebook.  Seriously.  What business are you in anyway?  Private detective?  Cause you’d have to be one to figure out that they are a real estate agent.

You can keep your Facebook private, while also making sure that others (who are not connected to you), know who you are!  It’s all a matter of making your “About” section public vs. keeping it under lock and key.

It amazes me the number of people that request to join the Facebook For Real Estate Agents group and I have no way of determining if they are a real estate agent or not!  It’s mostly the ones who have everything on their profile so stink’n locked down, I can’t tell if they are an agent or not!

Know what’s amusing about the “privacy vigilante’s??”  All too often, I can clearly see their photos, even a good number of their posts, the groups they are members of, etc. But can I see where they work?? Heck no!

So the point of this whole article?  Fill in your “About” section on your Facebook personal profile and make it public!!!

    I was one who had everything on Facebook on lock down. As you said, I am not a PI and I want people to know who I am so they can find me for their real estate needs. I’m a very ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get’ person, and I operate my real estate business with that in mind. Again, thank you for your informative posts.
